SPRING2020 by Nikolle Denise

Winter turned to Spring,
and in a small Oklahoma town
I worried my lungs would
no longer support me; worried that
my fear had already made me too tired.

Suddenly, my heart was screaming
my head shouting, telling me
that we can’t be locked in here together -
alone.

Schools are out, children
are going without food; put into
undesirable situations.
Parents are missing work.

Suddenly, education is now
important. And socialism doesn’t
seem so bad. Shelves are
empty, elders are being forced
to go without. Toilet paper
has become more important than medicine,
and cities are being shut down.

But Italy…Italy locked down
their entire country and then
Venice began turning blue, fish
began swimming. The ghosts
of the boats from before, were
just that – ghosts. Memories
of a different time – day 13
has now passed.

Suddenly, we all had to learn to breathe
again, and the smog lifted, birds
began to sing, and the quiet
nights became the one thing
that saved us all.
